In 1754, King George II gave a land grand to James Ormand.  At that time, the land was part of Tryon County, Carolina.  James Ormond founded the Ormand
Mining Company which facilitated the inception of Bessemer City, North Carolina.

The Old Ormand Furnace can be found in the Bessemer City area, and is the oldest of its type in America.  It was used to process ore mined in the nearby region.
Its history is ambiguous, but one tale says it was put to use producing cannon balls for the Revolutionary War.  The furnace is now used as a picnic ground and is the
venue for the Ormand Family Reunion, which has been held every year since 1897.  It is one of the oldest family reunions in America.

In 1846, Tryon County was divided and part of it was named Gaston County.  Bessemer City was officially chartered in 1893 as a Gaston County city.  Mr. John
Askew Smith was a founder of Bessemer City and a house he built in the 1900’s still stands.  The house is called “High acre,” and is presently owned by the Eury
family, which currently inhabit the residence.

Agriculture was the most prominent profession at that time of which corn and cotton were the primary crops. Cotton mills started to flourish in this area about that
time, also. The population of Bessemer City, NC at the time of its consisted of several families, but by 1900 it had gradually grown to 5 or 6 hundred people.

In 1895, Stonewall Jackson Durham and John M. Odell joined to incorporate Southern Cotton Mills and as their maiden venture, opened the Smith/Pinchback Mill.
A group of textile mills opened by Smith and Pinchback; Durham and Odell; Frank, Robert and Max Goldberg; and the Ragan Spinning Company, provided
Bessemer City, North Carolina with its industrial foundation.

Today Bessemer City is still in the mining business. One of its most prominent industries is FMC Lithium, Inc. They produce more lithium than any other company in
North or South America.  Lithium is a vital ingredient in pharmaceuticals, batteries, ceramics, etc.

There are still some remnants of agriculture in the form of businesses like Kiser's Dairy Farm, which has about 200 farm animals.  Mr. Kiser is a direct descendent of
one of the original founding families in Bessemer City.  Recently, a wide range of businesses have discovered the diversity of assets Bessemer City has to offer and
have become part of its thriving community.
